Lowest of the Low

Let me just say, at the risk of offending anyone who does this on a regular basis, that it bothers me, for some snobby reason, to see people out in their pajama bottoms in public. You know, those fleece pajama pants that everyone wears? Only I don’t understand how someone can pair those pants with a t-shirt and a pair of flip flops and go out shopping at Wal-Mart …. like no one notices that they’re still in their pajamas? Like that’s not sending the blatant message that the rest of us aren’t even worth expending the energy to put on a pair of real pants for? It just looks sloppy and lazy and I don’t like it. Of course, considering I wear elastic-waisted yoga capris and a sweatshirt out in public almost every day, I don’t know that I should really fling any stones, but whatever.

So anyway, I left for the lake Friday morning for a girl’s weekend away with some of my new local friends. One of them invited a group down to her cabin for a few days and I was lucky enough to be included, but really wanted to come home early in order to see the kids’ soccer games on Saturday. (See? See how I complain about the soccer schedule but deep down, I love it enough to leave my girls’ weekend away?)

So early Saturday morning ….. like, 6am early, I got up and headed home. I was sharing a room with another girl and didn’t want to turn on the lights, so I thought long and hard (for about two seconds) about the fact I was going straight home, so what would it hurt to just wear my pajama bottoms for the car ride? I wouldn’t have to turn on the light to get my “real” clothes out of the suitcase ….. I would be in the car about two and a half hours, and honestly, would probably be more comfortable in pajama pants …. I mean, really, who am I going to see??

So, an hour down the road, as I was pulling into a Love’s to buy gas, I realized I would have to get out of the car in my pajama pants to pump the gas … but it’s not like anyone would notice, right? Of course, after I pumped the gas, and the “See Cashier” light blinked at me, I realized I would have to go inside the Love's ….. but maybe nobody would notice I was wearing pajamas.

It wasn’t until I was standing in line at Loves, for like ten solid minutes because the woman in front of me wanted two servings of biscuits and sausage gravy but she didn’t want much of the actual sausage in the gravy so would the cashier mind trying to scoop out the parts of the gravy that were the smoothest???? That I realized the line was getting long and several people, in fact, had seen me in my pajama pants.

And I looked down at the floor, in a brief moment of shame --- and realized I still had on my house slippers, as well.

And it wasn’t until I got back out to my car, red-faced from being caught out in public in not only my pajama pants, but my house shoes as well, that I glanced in the rear view mirror and realized I still had the clip in my hair, holding up my bangs, from where I had washed my face and brushed my teeth before leaving the cabin that morning.

Seriously. I can never make fun of the slobs in Wal-Mart in their pajama pants ever again. Nor can I get dressed in the dark because apparently I don’t do it very well.

I go out in my pajama pants when I am on mission like cleaning house and realize I need something. I am not proud of it in any way LOL. I just feel I may break the cycle of my ambitions by changing. My husband hates it and he actually gets pissed at me. I do not go shopping all day in them tho.

OMG, that is hilarious!!! I'm quite sure that no one noticed the jammie pants or the slippers, but the clip?? Way too funny!! :O)

I thought I just left a comment but apparently I didn't. So I will try again. I go out in my pajama pants all the time. Like when cleaning house and I realize I forgot something. My husband gets so pissed about it. I just feel that changing may change my ambitions LOL. I do not go out shopping all day in them tho.

That is so funny, and so something I would do!
One Christmas I was home and my parents sent me to town to get some pop to drink. I have this whole, "I'm so much better than all the losers who never left this town" feeling. Although the town I live in isn't any better, just closer to a city. Plus, the library in my home town is way better and we have stoplights.
Anyway, I walk into the convenience store feeling so much superior to those people who are in there when I look down and notice my clothes don't match.
Oh well, leave it to God to knock you down when you are feeling a little too superior!

Kristie;

I love those moments in life!! I always remind myself that I gave those folks a reason, if only for a brief shining moment, to feel superior! :)

I hope you had a great weekend anyway...pj bottoms and all.

Color me lazy... I wear my fuzzy warm dearfoam slippers to Ingles at 5:30 am when I have to pick something up for the kids' lunches before they go to school.

And I thought the same thing... "Who am I gonna see at 5:30 am at the Ingles?" The answer is, my son's cub scout leader. Talk about embarrassing!

But I still do it. :) They're very warm. And soft. And fuzzy. And comfy.

You crack me up!! I can so totally see you out like that. I also can't stand to see someone out in their pajamas. That is just wrong!! Well, what did you do for this girl's weekend, er night? Scrapbooking? We are due a night of cropping here pretty soon. I just got back from a cruise so I need to scrapbook it before I forget!!! Have a great day!

Isn't it funny when we get busted doing the very same thing we are so against? ha ha ha ... Ahem.. not that I would know about something like that....
Funny story, though!

I don't like the pajama bottom fashion statement either. It speaks of laziness and lack of social skills in my book

One thing is worse, and that's making a nasty comment to someone caught wearing their pajama bottoms on their morning walk in the dark.

Really, like my next door neighbor saying "nice pajamas" as I head back inside...

Can't you just feel the love?

I am with you. I also wrote a post a while back about the pajama pants at Wal-Mart (http://iknowwhereyoucanfindit.blogspot.com/2007/01/sleepwear-at-walmart.html). It's awful!! But I think you can be excused for this one time.

I think that pajama pants are just the norm at Wal mart-- I have never seen anyone do that at Target. Can you make the switch?!

Kristie - I feel your pain, sister. Although I have yet to venture out my front door in pajama pants YET, I HAVE been known to hit the convenience store for smokes (when I'm like, totally out!) in dirty hair with a baseball cap pulled low and sun glasses to hide the fact that I have NO makeup on! Also, in the last couple of years - elastic has become my new best friend. Sad, huh??!! And, I just have to ask - what the heck is a LOVE'S????? I've never heard of a place that sells both gasoline and biscuits and gravy.....is it a [[cough, cough]] midwest kind of thing?? Just kind of, you know, wondering.......

Ha. That's like my standard uniform, especially if I'm going to walmart. I don't know about the walmarts where you live, but at the one here, I'm generally the most well dressed person around.

The flip-flops are a must. A must I tell you.

I totally went on a girl's weekend once wearing my work shoes. I work in a dirty environment and I don't wear my work shoes anywhere else, except that I accidentally wore them on girl's weekend. Icky brown leather shoes and it was summer and I was wearing shorts. I had to wait to the next day to buy new shoes on my weekend. The horror.

Thanks for sharing because I needed to laugh out loud (sorry it had to be at your expense:).

Yep, just saw someone at the grocery store yesterday morning in her jammie pants. In high school, my friend, Cindy, drove home from a sleepover in her nightGOWN--GOWN, not pants of any kind. She got pulled over for speeding. Bummer. But it has provided more than 20 years of hilarity.

I can't bring myself to go out, even to the gas station in sweats or pajama pants, but I did discover one morning (after I walked through the school to get to my office) that I had left home wearing my pink fuzzy slippers. Oh well, my middle schoolers know that I'm kind of weird anyway.

I just wanted you to know that the other day my school had an assembly and a mom walked in wearing my nightgown, flip-flops and jogging pants... She wore this to listen to her daughters presentation... an hour long presentation.

You crack me up. that is so funny. But..I am with you, I just think its not very polite to be out shopping in your pajama pants, and slippers, but most people I 've seen dont' have there bangs clipped up..ha ha ha! Wendy

If I were behind you in line, I would have snubbed my nose at you! I'm classy -- I always at least put on sweats....

LOL Kristie---- I wouldn't be caught dead in pjs in public either. Though, to give you a different perspective, my mom, who is getting older and is pretty sickly, often goes out in p.j. bottoms(and flip flops with socks- gasp!) It doesn't bother me one iota to go out with her this way, not one. I once asked her why she didn't just throw on some jogging pants and tennis shoes. She told me "I'm comfortable, if someone doesn't like the way I'm dressed, then piss on them."

Oh, and I TOTALLY agree with the previous poster..... to get the full meaning of this post, we MUST see a picture--- LOL!

I'd take a whole Wal-Mart filled with women in pajama pants over one man wearing sweat pants and no underwear.

UGH!!!

So, here's the thing. I LOVE wearing my jammy pants. My favorite are a pair I found at K-Mart when I had been shopping at the boutique next door that had no bathroom. Suddenly I HAD to go, so I ran into K-Mart, bee-lined for the potty, and while running through the men's department spotted a pair of Kermit the Frog jammy pants.

It drives my family CRAZY. I have even bought t-shirts with the exact intent that they match the Kermie jammy pants.

The upside? My sister thinks I will be Stacy and Clinton of the show 'What not to wear' greatest challenge and is waiting with excitement for the day that she can write in and request that they consider me for their show. (Currently I have some health issues that would prevent me from being a candidate.)

I almost gave my sister a coranary when I told her I found a pair of men's silky jammy pants at the Goodwill and wore them for an evening out...

I admit it freely. I have NO taste. All I need is a trailer, a bottle of booze, a cigarette that is nothing but ash all the way to the filter, and some curlers for my hair.

I totally get your embarrassment. I won't even leave the house wearing sweatpants. I'm not sure why. To my mom's deepest dismay I never wear makeup, but the thought of wearing sweatpants (the ones I sleep in night after night) out in public scares me. They just don't go well with any of my shoes.

Kelly said...

I know that "everyone" has probably done it to some extent or another. Most of us probably would have done the same thing you did...driven home in their PJ pants because it makes sense...it's comfy and cozy and why not on a long drive?? Totally makes sense that you had to run into a store real quick on the way home. The clip thing was hilarious though!!

I think it's strange and somewhat ridiculous that some people out there think there's nothing wrong with going to the store on a regular basis in their PJ bottoms and slippers. It's like saying "I'm too cool to get dressed"

Anonymous said...

I would rather see the pj pants than a really chubby girl in too short shorts with serious muffin-top. Or belly roll. Or camel toe. Seriously, do these people have a mirror?

Years ago my then six or seven year old niece gave me a makeover with her brightly colored play makeup, drawing flowers on my cheeks, wild and crazy colors over my eyes, etc. I wore it that way all night at the family dinner we were at. On my way home I stopped at Wal-Mart real quick, and was mortified to discover I'd forgotten to wash my face, had forgotten all about my 'makeover' and had walked around in Wal-Mart like that, totally oblivious. I seriously considered suicide.

That's really funny. I used to HATE in college when people would wear pajama pants to class. I could kind of (not really) understand for an 8am class but by 3pm GO HOME AND PUT ON SOME CLOTHES! :)

Oooohhh...this one hit home.....can I get a "free pass" to wear my pajama pants out in public if I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant and my back side is entirely too big to fit into anything else? I know that I look slobbish in every other way....so why not just add to it right?

This post really made me laugh!!! Especially when you got to the clip in your hair part!

Oh mon Dieu!!! Too funny, wish I could have seen you too!!
I've been going to a friend's house 12 k's away to feed her cats twice a day for the last few days whilst she's away, I go in my painting clothes and house shoes, (I'm decorating) hope the car doesn't break down!!!

Oh my gosh, I just laughed so hard. Oh man, that's funny! I too have never understood the pajama pant thing in public either. To each there own I guess. Thanks for the great laugh...right before bed.

lol! welcome to the land of slobs kristie! hahaha! Seriously, though, I am totally guilty of wearing my jammies out- to the store, and even a few times (gasP) to pick up dinner! I admit, it is pure lazy of me!

**At least you weren't near home, so no one who saw you will probably ever see you again!
