Proof my son needs more culture

Kellen had a soccer tournament this weekend. The venue was a soccer club about forty minutes from our house, and his team had a game Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon ... then again Sunday morning (What the heck? Don't the people who schedule these games go to church? The tournament had games at 7:30 AM Sunday morning --- thank goodness it wasn't us, is all I'm saying) and Sunday afternoon.

There were two hours to kill each day between the morning and afternoon games. Not enough time to go home, but too much time to just sit at the fields and do nothing. So the entire team decided (both days) to go out and have lunch together. Nothing strikes fear in the heart of a Dennys employee like having a mob like us walk through the door, asking for a table for twenty-four people, twelve of whom are "children" .... "children" who are, in this scenario, ten and eleven year old boys; noisy, sweaty, stinky, rambunctious, loud. (And extremely sweet and precious, but probably the Dennys workers couldn't see past the soccer uniforms and cleats and hungry, hungry boys to realize that ..... whatever, that's not even the point to this post.)

Today Kellen asked where were we going for lunch, and I said "The other parents want to go to Poblanos."

He asked, "Poblanos? What's that?"

And I said, "It's Mexican."

His response? "Oh, good. I've been in the mood for egg rolls."

I totally repeated the story later, at the table, because Lord knows I'm not above exploiting my children if its good for a laugh.

What made it funnier, although proved to me that seriously, we need to get out more as a family, was when the Poblanos waitress came to the table and he ordered chicken strips.

My kids also get chicken tenders at Mexican restaurants too. We are as cultured as y'all are. And we live in TX!

My BoyChild always orders the Chicken Nuggets at the Mexican Restaurants too. Maybe it's a boy thing.

That is funny. Our children are also sheltered eaters. The oldest will now eat one Chinese food dish and a quesadilla from a Mexican restaurant, but the younger two will order grilled cheese or chicken tenders.

Tournament scheduling and sports in general does not accommodate church going. On Saturday we had a swim meet. Then Sunday our middle daughter had an all-day volleyball tournament. While the oldest had an afternoon volleyball tournament. So when we were supposed to go to Mass -- not Sunday a.m. or p.m. Well, I feel awful but today we just did not go. I could have taken the two who were home in the morning, but decided to do laundry instead. I hate having to make decisions like this.

No lie.. I made quesadillas for dinner tonight, and my son said "Hey, we're eating Italian tonight!" ???? Must be a boy thing, that's all I can say.

LOL!!

The chicken strips must be really good at the Mexican places because that is also what my kids eat there. Someday I hold out hope that they will expand their taste bud horizons.

Well, to be fair, the people who schedule these tournaments would have a hard time respecting everyone's beliefs. There's church on Sunday but there's also synagogue on Saturday. It's impossible to accommodate everyone.

Too funny! I think the soccer clubs and restaurants are in together on the scheduling so that we get stuck spending money! And yes, I hate Sunday morning games.

When D was little he used to go with us to all kinds of ethnic restaurants - - he would eat Indian and everything else. I was all - - of course kids eat what they're EXPOSED to - - thinking what a great progressive mom I was. Until he switched to wanting only bland white bread chicken strips. Rats. I guess it's just kids.

Our kids have hot dogs at the Mexican place and grilled cheese and french fries at Chinese...those Chinese make some awesome catsup if you ask my kids.

We were lucky (??) enough last year to have one of those early Sunday morning games at a tournament. Had to be at the fields by 6:15 a.m. and of course, mom got to take the player while the beloved husband graciously "volunteered" to stay back at the hotel with the other three sleeping kids. Somthing's just not right about that!

Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers!

I have been following a blog that you might find interesting. It is a very inspiring story about a man rowing a 19 foot rowboat across the Atlantic to raise money for cancer research. He is currently on day 60 of his row. I hope you find it an interesting read! http://rowforhope.com/

Shelby always says she HATES Mexican food. Which makes the rest of us howl with laughter, seeing how she only eats chicken fingers when we go out for Mexican.
