Even the kids are starting to catch on ...

Kellen and Kendrie both won "Sensational Citizen" awards at their school on Friday. Back in MY day, it was called "Citizens of the Month", and they did it .... well ... monthly. But now they only do it once every nine weeks, AND the kids totally get to leave campus and go out for a pizza lunch with the principal and what did WE ever get besides a measley mention of our name during morning announcements and maybe a certificate not that I would know because I don't think I was ever ONCE named Citizen of the Month the entire twelve years I went to school there what am I chopped liver not that I'm bitter or anything.

Anyway.

The teachers let all the parents whose kids were chosen (about three hundred and ninety-two of us) know that the awards would be passed out during the Friday morning assembly so we could go for picture-taking purposes.

After the names were called and the certificates passed out, I asked Kellen and Kendrie, and their cousin who was also named, to stick around for a few quick photos.

Kellen didn't look too happy and I asked him why. Not that this is the biggest honor in the history of mankind or anything, but I was still proud of him and thought he would have been more pleased.

"Of all the days," he hissed at me under his breath, "for me to get an award, it has to be today? Book Character Day? The day all the parents show up, and I'm up here in front of everyone, dressed as TOM SAWYER?!?"

And I thought to myself, "Honey, as many dress-up days as you have around here, odds are running about three-to-one that ANY day you won an award would be a dress-up day."

But you notice he refused to take his jacket off ..... oh well, at least he's in good company:

A cat.

His cousin, the squirrel. And his sister, who had the good sense to select Jigsaw Jones, Boy Detective, who dresses like a normal person.

And look, Laura Ingalls is in the house. And for the person who asked if the teachers dress up as well --- do you see Snow White? She is one of the kindergarten teachers. The other seven teachers were ...... (go ahead, you can guess ....) the dwarves.

Poor Kellen.. it's hard to explain to him that stuff like this is like money in the bank when you get older and everyone is telling stories about "the old days". And seriously, I haven't decided yet if the school blows me away or just cracks me up. One thing is for sure; all of the kids will take away the very important life skill of being able to come up with a costume for ANY occasion at the drop of a hat. They should all be very much in demand around Halloween, no matter where they live.

The look on Kellen's face says it all! Congrats to the kids, and hang in there Chopped Liver, maybe your day will come. :) Hope you aren't dressed as Becky Thatcher when it does. (Cracked up at "Laura Ingalls is in the house!)

I've read about all of the dress up days and projects your kids have and thought glad that's not us. Then I went to my son's conference last week where she went on to tell us about the last trimester and how they will build this and dress up on this day and do this project and started laughing. My husband is like what. Up until this point the hardest thing we had to do was the 100th day of school. Now it's building leprechan traps, dress up days, etc.

I must say though I'm really looking forward to the flat Stanley project. He's being mailed to relatives out of state and I'm making it a point to go into the school to see what all he comes back with.

Kristie, Tell him, the principal purposefully decides to do awards when the kids are dressed up so the parents get to see all the neat costumes!

Someone should dress up as Laura's blind sister and get all crazy with the calico. Kristie, thank you so much for the tag on your blog roll. I'm honored, and am sending you oodles of virtual Diet Dr. Pepper. (with crushed ice. In a virtual Sonic cup).
You're the best!

There were 392 character award winners. Did I get that right? That seems like a huge number. How bug is your school? Or does the 392 include all the parents.

In any event Kudos to Kellen. I sympathize with the whole dressing up in character day. I've never heard of a school like yours.

I noticed the hair before the expression, lol. Is that his real hair??

I would HATE the dressup days. Amazing that over 300 kids got the award. I can't imagine being the parent who's kid is left out if that many were awarded.

I think Kellen looks cute, but from past experience reading this blog if you don't agree you really should not say so or even ask what's with the long hair?

Haven't any of you people seen The Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis? He has long hair and he is HOT!!!

Oh I think the kid is adorable no matter how long his hair is. I just don't remember it being that long before, and I kind of remember Tom Sawyer having long hair and thought it could be part of the costume. By the way, I am that one that wrote the post above and forgot to put my name. I didn't realize it would come across like I was criticizing his hair and wanted to explain. I hate how I tone can be misread in writing.

Really, long hair has made a comeback. I have a 12 yr old son that I negotiate over this with all the time.

Kellen is a handsome dude, long hair or short. He is getting so big from when I first started reading the Escoe family posts. I bet he has the little girls all over him:)

Just to clarify, I wrote the post saying I would hate dressup days/and about the amount of kids getting the award and asked if it was his real hair (because it seemes to have grown really fast, not because I think it looks bad!)

My post was the one at 1:34PM. And again, if I came off as rude/critical I want to apologize. All Escoe kids are adorable:)
