Clarification

I think I should clarify, to avoid having Nickelodeon slap me with a defamation lawsuit:

These are two separate channels. Nickelodeon (think Spongebob, Jimmy Neutron, Fairly Oddparents) is the channel aimed at young kids. My kids love this channel and watch it quite a bit. Although we have re-initiated our "no TV Monday through Thursday rule now that school has resumed, and they are chafing quite a bit, and I'm once again hearing the rumblings about how I'm the meanest parent in the world...)

The "N" is a channel aimed for teenagers. In fact, it's tag-line is something like "Nick Teen" and the shows they air at night are DEFINITELY off-limits for my kids. But during the day on Saturday and Sunday, they also air Nickelodeon shows my kids *are* allowed to watch, such as Drake and Josh, iCarly, and Zoey 101.

I'm sure it was naive of me to think the commercials aired during these kid-friendly shows would also be kid-friendly. (Much like I got my panties in a wad about the evening soap operas that aired during "Dancing with the Stars" last year, which prompted several of you to tell me how much of a hypocrite I was, and how gullible I am, thank you very much ..... )

But now that we've banned the entire "N" channel, I suppose it's a moot point. I mean, we've already been forced to discuss the provocative Vanessa Hudgens photos, and the Jamie Lynn Spears pregnancy ---- surely we're still ok with Disney CHANNEL???? At least until Zack or Cody go buy their first condoms, or Hannah Montana starts giving blow jobs, or those wacky kids from High School Musical go off to college and start experimenting with alcohol and drugs. *THEN* I suppose I'll revamp again.

So I really think I should Preview before I Publish...

What I meant to write was that I don't think I'm old enough to watch the commercials you described!! My 11-year old son runs screaming (not quite - but is rather emphatic) that he is NOT allowed to watch Adult Swim, nor are his siblings. I love having the Film Board in my house - saves me a lot of trouble.

Thanks for the heads-up again - us Mom's have to stick together!

Good gosh, my mom had it SO easy... 3 network channels plus PBS, and they all kept everything sanitized ALL the time. Now, between cable/satellite TV and the internet... ugh. It sure SEEMS like there's a lot more work to parenting than there used to be....

My kids have outgrown Noggin for the most part, but it used to share a channel with the N--Noggin until 5 p.m., the N from 5 at night until 5 a.m. I didn't realize the advertising was so racy. Guess I better keep an eye on the 9-year-old...

Family Channel, too, has some inappropriate commercials...it drives me crazy.
Not to mention that when we are all watching the Yankee game or something equally innocuous we must endure every Viagra commerical ever made. Really not something I want to discuss with my 11year old...thank you very much.

my kids were banned from all c&ap TV nearly one year ago.
It was the absolute best decision we ever made.
There is no Nick, no Disney and life is peaceful once again!
They watch Discovery channel or American Idol!

I'm another one that is trying to gear the kids more toward Discovery channel and animal planet. Not that they don't see some mating there, lol.

Zach and Cody *really* bothers me. You have these little 10-11-12 yr old boys acting like they are so horny and constantly out to score a girl. Not only is it totally inappropriate, but no boys I know of that age even think like that. They are pushing that crap younger and younger. Drake and Josh have some dating, but I can tolerate that. At least they are clearly late teens and the majority of the show focuses on the brothers' relationship. Zoey 101 is just plain awful to me.

They really need to put some better shows on for the 8-14 set IMHO. These kids are past Noggin and PBS but the alternative is filled with dating, who's hot, who is popular etc.

Then again, maybe I am a hypocrit b/c we are die-hard Spongebob fans here, lol.

There are just some things that don't need to be on t.v. And what the heck are they advertising if the girls kissing or the vibrator falling..wow, maybe viagra, tampons and pregnancy tests aren't quite so bad! I know MY 14 year old boy loves to hear about how great Playtex Sport Tampons are when we're watching football games together!!

You're hilarious! Isn't it funny how we learn as we grow? The other day my sister (mother of a 2 & 3 year old) said to me, " I'm so glad I had my kids so close together, they don't know that anything other than PBS exists, I'd DIE if I had to fight with a 2 year old over watching Hannah Montana!" I just laughed, she's got it coming!

Here in Canada we don't get "Nick" all of the Nick or Nick jr shows are on a channel called YTV or public access channels...most of the shows my 11 and 9 year old watch are on a channel that only advertises itself or channels like Discovery or Food Tv... I could not imagine having commercials like that on a kids show...I mean I am far from a prude but how soon do we need our kids growing up?....By the way Kristie we have adopted your policy about Monday - Thursday tv watching with the exception of one show we watch together on Wednesdays....you are not too popular around my house :)

I watched iCarly with my daughter a couple of weeks ago when she was sick. I thought it might be a step up from the sarcastic, snotty "humor" of Hannah Montana, Drake and Josh, etc.. it was better, yes,but then (because for once I was watching *with* my children, not using it as a babysitter:) I viewed the commercials. I'm with you Kristie--- no more N!

Our daughter alerted us about the two kissing girls on a commercial which aired during Zoey 101. This station is now banned from our TV. Nice going Nogin and Nickelodeon. What a shame...
