Ouch.

Kendrie came home from school yesterday very excited, and said to me, “Mom! Great news! We’re starting the Reading Buddy program at school this week!”

Absentmindedly, I replied, “Oh, that’s nice.”

She went on, “I loved it at our old school when the big kids would read to us …. I’m excited to do Reading Buddy here, too.”

And I sort of paused …. hmmmm, had a lightbulb moment …. and asked her, “Are you sure you understood right? And your class is doing it this year? Because it seems to me that you and your friends, in 3rd grade, should already know how to read pretty well. I mean, aren’t you a little old for a Reading Buddy?”

Kendrie laughed (in that “my mom is a moron” way she has) and said, “Mom, I don’t *get* a Reading Buddy, I *AM* the Reading Buddy! I’m going to be reading to a kindergartener! I’m the big kid now!”

Ouch.

Excuse me while I pull the bbq spear out of my heart, at the realization that my “baby” is now one of “the big kids”. Vasectomy reversal, anyone?

I swear all you do is blink and they grow right up!
It sure would be nice if we could make them stay little. ;-)
Just get those hugs and cuddles now before it isn't cool anymore.
I bet you are very proud of your helping reading buddy. :-)

I have followed Kendrie since her CB page and got *teary-eyed* while reading your post just thinking about how amazing this girl is and how far she has come. Her life is a testimony to answered prayer. Still praying for the Escoe family!

Kristie;

My "babies" are in 3rd grade now too. Not sure how that happened...

Ya know, this is a perfect example of why my daughter's teacher & I were discussing why our kids (if they want to) are still allowed to sleep in our beds - because we're not ready for them to grow up and away.

Thanks for the reminder to hold them close, hugs to you all today,

Kim

How fun for Kendrie! She will be such a wonderful reading buddy for some lucky little K5 sweetie. You need to find a way to get in there and take pictures!

Mine are 25 and 28. The trade-off is that I have a fabulous grandson who is almost three. Life is good!

Being that I found you on CaringBridge, it makes me happy beyond words to know that Kendrie is one of the big kids now!

That's ok... we all go through it. I realized just the other day that Rhya is a junior this year... a JUNIOR!! After next year, she'll be off to college and gone! (I realized it about the time I had to pay the $60 deposit on her $240 class ring... yeah, they do that when they're juniors now. Ugh.)

Oh, those are painful words coming from your baby. Just wait until she starts talking about college. It will be hear before you know it!!

I hear you. I refuse to believe my 5yo is not a baby anymore. Though he is getting a little heavy to carry!

That has been one of the hardest things for me to deal with as a parent-- how quickly they grow. It truly is bittersweet.

Yesterday my middle child turned 6, when she woke in the morning, she came and stood in my door way, looked at me and said "I'm six!" I told her to go back to bed, stay there all day and be five again, that I wasn't ready for her to be six yet.

Yeah, Yeah...my vote is for the reversal! :) Since Kendrie is now old enough to be the reader, you will no longer have to volunteer for that job and you can stop the self mutlilation you have been known to do during the ever so fun task of reading with the little kids! :) It was one of Nathan's highlights of his 3rd grade year...they can share stories on the cruise!
