The Short List

Wow. Dudes. Who knew you people were so passionate about your beer? I don’t think I’ve gotten that many comments on a post … well ….. EVER. So, thank you so much for chiming in with your suggestions. Many were good, a few were goofy (Fat Boy!?) and a few are being taken under serious consideration.

It would probably be easier for me to tell you which names are definitely OUT of the running, and why.

If we were going by sheer popular vote, the winner, hands down, would be Stella. But …. No. It’s too Tennessee Williams, and I don’t want to be a caricature of Marlin Brando every time I stand outside and yell her name. Of course, we could name the pound puppy “Yo Adrianne!” and have a matching set, couldn’t we?

Other names ruled out for one reason or another:

Killian. LOVE this, but like several of you mentioned, it’s too similar to Kellen.

Honey. This was my mother’s dog’s name, may she rest in peace, sweet little weenier dog.

Pauli. Am I the only one who thinks of that stupid kids movie about a parrot?

Corona. Also a popular choice, but it’s a little too Mexican-Hat-Dance for me.

And although I like LOTS of these names, we know people with the same names, and they therefore feel odd: Sierra, Shandie, Riley, Kira, Abby, Quin, and Beck. So all of these possibilities are ruled out as well. And I'm amazed at how many people we know are named after beer! (Even if their parents totally say they are not.)

I can tell you Blaine is leaning strongly towards Amber. STRONGLY. I’m not crazy in love with it. No offense to anyone named Amber out there, but doesn’t it sound a little porn-star-stripper-ish? Brayden doesn’t like Amber because the villain in several girls’ shows (think Hannah Montana, and Hairspray) are named Amber. But if Blaine gets to choose, this is probably what it will be.

Personally, I like Molson, Barley, Brew, and Miller.

And I’m embarrassed to admit, I’m reconsidering our original choice of Sam Adams.

We get to visit her tomorrow night and I’m hopeful we’ll have a made a choice by then. Or maybe she’ll be like those poor babies that go home from the hospital with no name, just an ankle bracelet with “Baby Girl Escoe” printed on the side with Blaine and I protesting feebly that "we just need to see her, and learn her personality, and then her name will come to us!"

Regardless, thank you guys for all your suggestions, and I’ll let you know when the decision is made!

Here's an idea, not sure its an original one though - name this pup "Barley" and the pound pop "Hops"

Love the name Barley! Or Miller. I also like the Barley and Hops suggestion. You can't get more "beer" than that. Good luck with the puppy...in about 6 months you will have a dog you can actually enjoy! Haha.

Miller is good. And honestly I liked Sam Adams from the first time you mentioned it. Have fun visiting the puppy!

Oh, and is that a total admission that Miss Kendrie came home without a name? Well, for what it's worth, I think you did a great job naming her- very unique, very.....well, Kendrie! And besides, it's better to leave the hospital without a name than to go home with a made up on the spot name like Orangejello. Yes, I have actually seen that name. Orange Jello- seriously, did they just look at the meal tray and think "hey that would be fun". It was pronounced Or-ahnge-elo.

Love Barley! That's adorable. As for Amber, you'll probably meet one eventually, so if you don't want a person-you-know name, ditch that one.

As an aside, I named my dog Kaeli. My cousin's daughter, Caileigh, was thrilled to have a canine namesake. :)

Not sure if this could really be a name, lol, but just to add something different. Zulu beer in South Africa is called iJuba or Juba, meaning dove.

My vote is for Barley that's a great name! I'm with you re: Amber.

Ha! My neice is named Amber and I have no doubt she will someday live up to her (horrible) name. You said what I could never. Must reamin annonymous on this one:)

I feel your pain! We created a list of 27 possible names for our puppy before she came home. We finally landed on the one name everyone could live with: Lola. There's a stripper name for you!

Sorry, no beer names from me! The closest I could come would be daquiri or margarita, but the dog would have to be dyed to match!

Our cat is named Stella and I totally feel on the Marlon Brando thing. I *hate* to go outside and call her. At first it was funny. It got old quick. Buh-leeeve me. I'm betting you go with Sam Adams. ;)

Funny... the comment that I deleted on the last post said exactly the same thing about Stella... too Tennessee Williams-ish, and how old it would get standing in the back yard yelling her name... ! I do think Sammi would be cute.... but really, you'll know better once you've spent a little time with her. I first named my last cat "Sylvester" because he looked just like the Sylvester and Tweetie cat. But after a week, his personality was so much more "Sebastian" that I changed his name, always a point of confusion at the vet's office. So take your time....

I have recently been introduced to your blog and I just wanted to let you know how entertaining, inspirational, and enjoyable I find your postings to be. Thank you for sharing your life with complete strangers like me (not sure if you meant to do that of not)

P.S. I grew up eating at Sonic; to be nothing beats a cherry limeade and tater tots.

If he absolutely HAS to have Amber---go with Amber Brew and "call" her Abbie (A + B).

What about Heiniken? I personally like Barley- is she golden red or golden blonde? That is definitely a fun name for a sweet breed. Our golden, named by our children, after vetoing Wags from the wiggles, named ours "Goldie"- original I know!

What about Lambic? You could also name her Weizenbier and call her Weezer like in Steel Magnolias. Sam Adams has a Chrismas beer called Fezziwig. I think it's Marzen that's a special German beer.

You could also do Kirin, Bass, Labatt, Stroh, Coors (call her Corey), or Carling.

(PS I am so sorry I sound like an alcoholic in my first comment.)

Growing up we had a golden retriever named Amber (and as far as I know, she didn't lead a double life as a stripper):-). I think it is a great name for a golden retriever. It is the color of the fur.

I like Barley!

Barley is a cool name and would totally fit. What about Malt for the pound pup?

You could also go with some Wisconsin beers like: Spotted Cow (Spot!) or Island Wheat (Wheaties!).

I adore the Sam Adams name - one of my corgis is Sam - not for the beer but Sam nonetheless.

I also like the name Barley a lot!

Spending some time with this adorable little girl will likely give you the answer to this question! Enjoy her ----

So then, how about Busch?

Can't wait to see pictures

I was just at Total Wine and More and found myself looking at beers just to come up with a name.

The only new ones I saw (that haven't been mentioned yet) are Sweaty Betty Blonde (which I don't think is a good dog name, but it was pretty funny) and Estrella Damm, which is kind-of pretty.

I like Kirin Ichiban, which I always call Kirin Itchybottom. Not sure if I could use that one, but the kids might get a kick out of it.

I waited til the crowd was out of the way... I like Miller.

Doesn't it always crack you up when you have almost 200 comments on the subjects of beer dog names and pre-teen cell phones?? The more serious matters don't get nearly as much response!

There is a micro brewery in HI called the Kona Brew Company. Kona could be a cute name........

Thank you! I too dislike the name Amber. It is stripperish and I have never met an Amber I liked. No offense to anyone named Amber, I'm sure there are several decent, kind, gentle people named Amber, I just haven't met them yet. I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way about that name.

Even the one legged kid passed him...

Sorry...Had to add my 2 cents, mostly because I was training to do BIG triathlons...Like 1.2 MILE swim in 56 degree water AKA downright miserably COLD water! I dare anyone to get in 80 degree water and tell me how it felt!!! Yeah, that's right...that kind of triathlon...

Hey if the one legged kid can do it in those conditions, I am sure YOU..Yes you Kristie Escoe, could swim 200 meters if your life depended on it (say your swept out into the ocean 200 meters from shore)...

Never say Never!!!

We went to a new restaurant/bar this weekend (we recently moved to New Bern, NC), there was a GIANT chalkboard with the names of every beer in the place. Most of the specific beer names didn't strike me as good puppy/dog names, but Pilsner kind of caught me eye!

Her proper name can be Millicent- and you can call her Miller! Or Millie if she is being really sweet!
