May I Introduce ......

Barley middle-name-to-be-decided Escoe

******************************
UPDATED TO ADD:
>>>>Ryley asks:
p.s. Do dogs have to have a middle name??? My dog doesnt have one.. am I a bad mom?????????? >>>>>>>>

Ryley, no, you are not a bad mom! Barley will be an AKC registered dog, so we have to select her full name to put on the registration papers we send in. We can technically name her whatever we want, and call her something completely different, of course. Typically, however, the kennel name is used as the first name. Since we bought Barley from a family and not a breeder, we won't use a kennel name at all, but would still like her to have three names. Unless we absolultely can't think of one, then she'll be plain ole' Barley Escoe.

********************************

We spent almost an hour last night visiting and playing with Barley and her five brothers and sisters. It should come as no surprise to anyone that hands down, Barley is the sweetest, cutest, friendliest, smartest dog of the bunch. (And I'm sure the families that were there before us, and the families that were there after us, all feel the same way about their own puppies.) (But they are wrong and we are right.)

We will be bringing her home on Saturday. That means we have one week to buy all the necessary dog paraphernalia, think of a middle name, remember the proper way (or shoot, I don't care if it's proper, so long as it's successful) to house train a puppy, and try to constrain our children's emotions and excitement because "is it Saturday yet? Huh? Is it? Is it? How many days until Saturday? How many hours until Barley comes home? Can we bring her home early? Huh? Can we? Can we??? How many hours? How many days?" to infinity.

It also means I have only one week left to enjoy my dog-hair-free house, sitting on a dog-hair-free sofa.... enjoying my dog-poop-free backyard, and walking around town in clothes not completely covered in dog fuzz. One hour of playing with the pup last night and I looked like Sasquatch.

Thank goodness she's cute, or it wouldn't be worth it.

How about Millicent? Miller for short. Barley Millicent Escoe- it has a nice ring to it! You can call her Millie when she's being a big old love!!

Ah, but she IS adorable! As to the pet hair - I feel your pain, only in our case it's "Elvis" (cat) hair - which we are both allergic to. Have you seen the commercial for some sort of vacuum that's supposedly great for pet hair, where the couple are sitting in a room where EVERYTHING is encased in clear plastic, including themselves???? Might work for the hair; you're on your own for the poop problem.......

That is about the most adorable dog I have ever seen!

I am going to have to think about a middle name-i am still bragging to my husband that you picked the name i orginally posted:) so until then i will say I have the Dyson Animal vacuum and it works wonders on pet hair. I have a lab at home and a 10month old so i have to vacuum a lot and it gets the job done!

LOVE the name!!! A perfect fit. Do you have the book 'Family Dog' or 'Water Dog??' Great books for anybody who has a dog in the Retriever family. I'm envious of your pup even though I've got two goofballs of my own here.

She is adorable.

Pet hair, hmm, if it were worth something, we'd be rich...with 2 dogs (Lab and Border collie) and 3 cats. Too bad it's just a bother...

Hey Kristie,

I love that name and yes it really does suit her cute, little face!

Ok here is a tip, it takes alot of work and commitment for you and your family but if you can pull it off you will be so happy for the rest of her adorable life...train her to use only a certain area in your yard to do her business, you have to be consistent but I am telling you it works and it is so nice not worrying about anyone stepping in surprises and having to search the yard when picking up. Plus it will save her killing the grass everywhere she pees, try an area where there is gravel or bark chips or whatever you have for landscaping, it will probably take several months but it will last a lifetime...

Have a great week, I am so excited for you guys!

Have fun with Barley. How about Barely Kristie Escoe since you are the one who will be cleaning, training etc. :)

OMG a Golden puppy! Our Golden baby is almost 4. He is hands down the VERY BEST dog I have ever had. Potty training a Golden is so easy, our Simon learned within a couple of weeks. Just reward the hell out of her when she does what you want where you want and it clicks so fast b/c they are such smart, eager to please dogs.

What isn't easy is: 1.The nipping of the kids. We broke this habit with a coffe can full of change. He hated the sound. Works well for jumping up on folks too. Cute when they are a baby, knocks you off your feet really fast!

2. The shedding hair. OMG, I could knit a new dog every week. Get a Dyson Animal. It will be well, well worth it.

3. Golden babies chew *everything*. Ours chewed through the cords to our AC unit in the middle of summer. He was fine, the $400.00 repair bill made me so NOT fine. Lotsa toys and lots of supervision is the only help for this.

Congrats on your new fur baby and take lots of pix. She will be huge in the blink of an eye.

GORGEOUS pup and great name. Oh, I envy the fun!

She's gorgeous. And look how dark her ears are. Goldens usually darken up to the color of their ears. And puppies don't shed much their first year. Besides you can coordinate your new rugs/furniture/etc with the dog hair so it doesn't show. Works for us!

Oliver would be very happy to meet Barley.

Barley is so darn cute and fuzzy!

Also, as for the pet hair on everything- we just got a FURminator (today) and it's amazing. It' rakes the undercoat and gets out all the loose hair without damaging their skin. It's absolutely wonderfu!!! They are pretty expensive ($35-65 retail) but Drugstore.com has them for cheap. We got ours for $24- well worth it!

When I see pictures like that, I have to remind myself I have allergies because I so want to run down to the Animal Shelter and get a puppy.

She's so cute, and Barley is a perfect fit!

Such a beautiful lady you will have! She definitely looks like a Barley!

I googled Barley just to see what I would find and discovered that barley is subjected to a process called "pearling" which removes part of the bran. How about Barley Pearl???

I agree with the comments on selecting a portion of the yard for her to do her "business" - it is an effort in the beginning for it requires walking her on the leash to that area but, once done, is magnificent!

I have three Welsh Corgis and one Schipperke - all double coated dogs - hair galore! I have yet to "furminate" them myself but have had the groomer do it many times. Furminating is the best gift a dog owner has ever received! I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you begin furminating Barley as a pup and make it a fun experience, she will love it and so will you (from the lack of hair!). The amount of hair removed during that process is amazing!

Enjoy your young lady - she wil be a lifelong companion to you all!

Congratulations! The newest Escoe baby is adorable and I love her name. Our neighbors have a golden named Stu and he is such a good dog. Seeing Barley's picture makes me want to get a puppy, oh wait, my kids are grown and off to college and career, what was I thinking? Have fun and post lots of pictures Saturday!

SO cute.

Oh yeah... thank goodness they're cute, or I'd be looking in some Korean cookbook for a good recipe for dog. Really.... the old sofa downstairs that was still relatively comfy has turned into one giant chew toy, and there are black doghair tumbleweeds everywhere. But I wouldn't trade our sweet girl for anything, and I can tell that Barley is a lucky girl, too! Why do I have the feeling that your pound pup really WILL be named Hops? Congrats to you all as your pack grows...

Oh my she is cute!!! I am a sucker for critters. And because of such an incuable disease, we have now totalled ours to 24. Yep. Although some of those are chickens/ducks. We just acquired THE cutest bunny EVER! So, I am looking forward to living vicariously through you and the new puppy.

Well, we adopted a little dog called Chelsea. Ronnie added 'Bun', then 'Ermintrude' - and when she got dirty. 'scruff', really she's Chelsea Bun, but on occasions she becomes Chelsea, Ermintrude, Scruff-bun, Burt! Whatever, she's wonderful, and I'm sure Barley will be a wonderful addition to your home.

Congrats in your beautiful new baby!!She is adorable!!
We bought a Goldendoodle, Gracie, who is now 5.5 months old. She is just wonderful, and doesn't shed! Gotta love that!
Enjoy!!

Goldens are my absolute favorite dogs in the whole world!!! I grew up with a Golden and my parents used to breed them. Oh and how heart breaking that was! As kids we always go super attached to the puppies and I always had a favorite, and they always had to go. One of these days we will get one too. She is so cute. Brayden looks so happy/excited!

We have an 8 year old Golden named Sandy and she is the BABY of our family. Just the most loveable animal! I wasn't a "dog person" until we got her - now she sleeps on our bed.

And I highly endorse the FURminator, too! Well worth the money and you could stuff a pillow case with the amount of hair it removes. It's amazing. Ordered mine on Ebay for about $30.

Seeing your puppy, Barley, makes me want another one...she's adorable.

Thought you might get a kick out of the email I got from my sister lsat night... She says "Did you know your name is mentioned on Not Quite What I Had Planned . . . in her post? You're famous if you've made it into a Kristi Escoe post!!"
Yippee for being famous!! Although she must have missed when you answered a baby question for me awhile ago! :)

Anyway.. didn't realize your were registering her... Our dogs registered name is Pitch Black Riddick. And his name is Riddick. But after you mentioned it I wished he had a middle name that I could call him when he was in BIG trouble.. He's only 4.. maybe its not too late!!! :)

Too cute! Now you'll have to write your own book, and call it "Barley and Me"...Bad joke, I know, but I couldn't resist. Enjoy your new baby, she's absolutely adorable.
